EPSRC Impact Acceleration Award

The Edinburgh NST team have received an EPSRC Impact Acceleration award to work with NST user group member Red Bee Media on a project entitled "Just-in-time speech recognition for subtitling news broadcasts".  The project will be carried out during 2015.

The aim of the project is to further develop the automatic speech recognition technology developed in NST to the task of transcription of news broadcasts. It brings together the state-of-the-art speech recognition technology developed by NST researchers, together with the commercial infrastructure developed by Red Bee Media, who are the industry leader in the production of subtitles to enable accessibility to broadcast data. The key objective of the project is to develop a close-to-real-time ("just in time") speech recognition system to transcribe pre-recorded (typically outside broadcast) video segments of news programmes, which are usually made available less than an hour before broadcast. As a tangible impact we plan to use the project outputs for live broadcast subtitling, in experiments to be carried out with RBM in the final part of the project.
